METAMORPHOSIS AND METALCORE: HOW MAVIS’ “DNA” TRANSFORMS HORROR INTO HEAVY ART

In their latest release “DNA,” German metalcore outfit MAVIS delivers a haunting meditation on metamorphosis that’s as philosophically intriguing as it is sonically powerful. The track deftly balances supernatural horror with deeply personal themes of transformation, creating an experience that lingers long after the final note fades.

The song’s narrative is a masterclass in psychological tension. Opening with the evocative image of “surrendering to the dark,” MAVIS wastes no time establishing their dark, atmospheric intentions. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of biological and spiritual transformation, with references to “Shifting DNA” and bodies being torn apart and reformed serving as the centerpiece of this unsettling journey.

What sets “DNA” apart from typical body horror narratives is its surprising embrace of transformation. Rather than fighting against change, the narrator welcomes it with open arms. The hypnotic mantra “Invade me / Reshape me” becomes more unnerving precisely because it’s delivered with such willing acceptance. This voluntary surrender adds layers of complexity to what could have been a straightforward horror story.

The song’s structure brilliantly mirrors its themes. As the narrator’s identity dissolves, the composition becomes increasingly fragmented and repetitive, creating a disorienting effect that pulls listeners into the experience. The production work by Manuel Renner at Überlärm Studios deserves special mention here – the layered vocals and atmospheric sound design create a rich tapestry of sonic metamorphosis.

Visually, the accompanying video, directed by Finn Regenhold and Philipp Kolodziej, translates these themes into striking imagery. The performances by dancer Jeffrey Zepf and pole artist Sabrina Chaparro physically embody the song’s themes of transformation and surrender.

“DNA” stands as a testament to MAVIS’s ability to push boundaries within the metalcore genre. By exploring the thin line between destruction and rebirth, they’ve created something that transcends simple categorization. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes the most terrifying changes are the ones we choose for ourselves.
