“Stranger At The Door” – Blue Canopy

United States

Have you ever heard a Dream Pop song where it connects a dog’s experience to what humans felt during the COVID 19 lockdown? Hit “play” on Blue Canopy’s “Stranger At The Door” and you can claim you have!

“Stranger At The Door is a song from my dog Banjo’s perspective. He’s been super anxious and paranoid since we moved to a new house. He’s especially worried that there is someone or something dangerous at the front door. Some of it, and the inspiration is from his perspective. I relate it later in the song to my own social anxieties that have escalated since COVID. I often don’t feel comfortable in my own skin, or without a mask, or around people in general.” – Alex Schiff (aka Blue Canopy)

“One Trick Pony” – B. Miles

United States

When I close my eyes and listen to “One Trick Pony” by B. Miles, the overall vibe is ideal for slow dancing in the kitchen with your partner during a warm summer night in the ’80s.  Recommend this song for fans of artists such as Feist, The 1975, Lana Del Rey and The Cardigans.

Her first song in two years opens up about fleeting admiration in our transient culture, and the very real toll that takes on artists’ mental wellbeing. Praised sonically as the “magnetic child of Romy Madley Croft and Lorde” (PAPER), B.Miles’ “One Trick Pony” acts as an initial step in liberation from chasing any past version of herself, in the process working to define what satisfaction looks like on her own terms.

If you are a fan of the laid-back vibes of chill, early ’90s Lenny Kravitz tunes, songs by LP or Maxwell, “Look Inside Me” by Boy Indigo is recommended for you! Between the dulcet vocals and the psychedelic dream pop composition, I feel this song will be on many people’s Valentine’s Day playlists!

Despite the music video having a Christmas theme, the chorus of “Love Me Back” by indie pop songstress, Lorelei Marcell determines the song can apply at any time of the year!  The song describes the energy she gave to a past love that wasn’t reciprocated, and that maybe next year someone will reciprocate feelings of love.

“Worth It” – Mike Baretz

United States

“For me, “Worth It” encapsulates a see-saw of self doubt paired with an almost-delusional belief in and love for someone. It zooms in on insecurities and flaws, but packaged in a ‘happy’ tone. When the chorus kicks in, the blind eye is turned from the internal doubts and insecurities and focuses on that person that makes you forget about everything having to do with the real world, those insecurities included. I wrote it during a time in my life that was focused on the downfalls and negatives of a breakup; I felt like I needed to write a happy song that still tied into the themes of everything else that I was writing about.” – Mike Baretz on “Worth It”

“Meet You In Hell” – Jade LeMac

Vancouver, BC

A song about karma, anger and revenge upon escaping a toxic relationship, “Meet You In Hell” by Canadian songstress, Jade LeMac is the ultimate breakup song after being hurt by someone you loved so deeply. This song is written from the perspective of one who was traumatised by the deceit and betrayal as they seek revenge.
